An extra hard drive caddy can be inserted instead of DVD-RW. You only need a Philips screwdriver to take it apart completely. Pros: lots of USB ports, DVI port, Gigabit LAN, RS-232 port, easy to repair, everything is user replaceable, even the CPU. And HP is the very definition of a bland, gray, featureless, emotionless corporate thing, so your employer will be happy to get them. What I'd like to be able to do is shove a laptop at corporate and tell them to supply us with this instead of the paperweights we've been getting, which either need a load of extra kit beside it to be useful (port replicators, usb to rs232 adpaators and stuff), or the damn things break after a month of using them, or both.įull disclosure: I'm a HP fanboy. Also, a build in optical drive would be nice, but not essential.Ĭan anyone recommend a laptop model, for carting around offshore, up a drill stack into the equipment room, round the back of the panel at a funny angle, plugging into your PLC to diagnose stuff? Plus it doesn't need to be a tank (or a toughbook) but something a little less flimsy and breakable than these precisions from Dell would be great. The trouble is the trend of reducing connectivity at the back.Īn RS232 port is really helpful to us, but rare these days. (precision mostly, we used to have latitudes but no more). So, we keep getting laptops pushed down on our department that are just not really fit for purpose, always some variety of Dell laptop.
